ML 63 AMG 2015

At a glance

The performance pinnacle of the M-Class range is the ML 63 AMG, which combines the key M-Class attributes of family-friendly versatility, class-leading safety and four-season usability with outstanding AMG performance, athleticism and style. This third-generation of AMG-developed M-Class is part of the four-strong Mercedes-Benz SUV line-up alongside the GLA 45 AMG, the GL 63 AMG and the G 63 AMG.

Hand-assembled AMG power

The ML 63 AMG is powered by a 5,461 cc biturbo direct-injection V8 engine, which generates 525 hp at 5,250 to 5,750 rpm and 700 Nm of torque, which remains constant from 1,750 to 5,000 rpm. Driving through a dynamic AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic Plus transmission with ECO start/stop as standard, the ML 63 AMG will sprint to 62 mph in just 4.8, and onto a 155 mph electronically limited top speed, while delivering exceptional mid-range punch. Combined economy and CO2 emission figures are 23.9 mpg and 276 g/km.

Biturbo induction

The ML 63 AMG’s V8 biturbo engine produces its exceptional levels of performance, economy and low emissions through an innovative combination of high-tech features. These include spray-guided direct-injection, twin turbo-chargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, alternator management and a weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust with chromed double twin tailpipes that contribute to the engine’s engaging soundtrack.

Performance Package

Buyers wanting even more punch can specify the optional Performance Package, which raises power and torque to 557 hp at 5,250 rpm and 760 Nm available from 2,000 - 5,000 rpm. This 32 hp and 60 Nm performance hike shaves another tenth of a second from the 0-62 mph acceleration time to 4.7 seconds, and offers even greater in-gear acceleration. The limited 155 mph top speed remains unchanged.

All geared up

The AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic Plus transmission offers three driving modes - Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual. In Controlled Efficiency mode the ECO start/stop system functions at all times unless deliberately disabled by the driver, ensuring no fuel is used and no CO2 is emitted while the car is stationary in traffic, while the gearshifts are relatively soft. In Sport and Manual, ECO start/stop is deactivated and the gear changes are significantly quicker, especially at full loads when ignition and injection in the cylinders is briefly retarded during shifting.

Braking news

The AMG high-performance braking system minimises stopping distances, maximises sensitivity and feel and offers high resistance to fading. Ventilated and perforated brake discs – 390 x 36 mm at the front and 345 x 26 mm at the rear – ensure outstanding deceleration. Six-piston fixed calipers are fitted at the front, while the rear axle has single-piston combined floating callipers.

AMG style

The unique AMG bodystyling of the ML 63 AMG includes radiator grille louvres painted in high-gloss black and adorned with a large Mercedes-Benz star. Fitted at the bottom of the AMG front apron is a trim strip in matt silver chrome, which emphasises the width of the car and harmonises with the surrounds of the daytime running lamps in the side cooling air intakes. The headlamp units feature as standard the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Light System (ILS). The AMG front apron blends into distinctive front wings, which are 10 mm wider than on other models on each side to accommodate the five-spoke AMG 20-inch light-alloy wheels in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, shod with 265/45 R 20 tyres. The wings are adorned with ‘V8 BITURBO’ logos, while dynamically profiled AMG side sill panels establish a visual link between the front and rear of the car.

Cabin class

ML 63 AMG drivers enjoy electrically adjustable AMG heated sports seats offering greater lateral support, and a four-spoke AMG performance steering wheel with perforated nappa leather in the grip areas, aluminium shift paddles and a flat-bottomed rim. Aluminium trim and a retractable cover in the centre console, decorated with piano lacquer. The standard leather upholstery includes contrasting double top stitching and AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats. The AMG-designed dashboard, armrests and door panelling are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with double top stitching. An AMG instrument cluster with colour TFT monitor welcomes drivers with a unique AMG logo and AMG main menu.

Generous standard equipment

Over and above the high levels of standard equipment enjoyed by all models in the M-Class range, the ML 63 AMG is fitted out with the following key AMG features: AMG Ride Control sports suspension; Active Curve System cornering roll stabilisation; AirMATIC air suspension with self-levelling and Active Damping System; AMG speed-sensing electro-mechanical power steering; 20-inch five-spoke AMG alloy wheels and an AMG high-performance braking system

Safety first

The ML 63 AMG is available with a full gamut of the latest Mercedes-Benz passive and active safety features and telematics options. Seven airbags are standard along with Attention Assist to monitor the alertness of the driver, the Pre-Safe® anticipatory safety system and Active Bonnet which provides better protection for pedestrians in a collision. Further standard safety features include Anti-lock Braking System with Brake Assist and ESP® Electronic Stability Programme.

Carry anything anywhere

The rear seats have adjustable backrests and are split one-third/two-thirds to give the maximum degree of interior versatility. There is an armrest and cupholder and a through-loading feature for long objects such as skis. Folding both backrests as well as the seat cushions forward creates a level load compartment with a vast capacity of 2,010 litres – almost three times the standard luggage capacity of 690 litres.

Dynamic on-road handling

The ML 63 AMG is fitted with a bespoke transfer case for its 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system. This distributes engine torque 40:60 per cent front-to-rear, while the standard AMG Ride Control sports suspension with AirMATIC includes Adaptive Damping System and the Active Curve System as standard. The double-link front suspension and multi-link rear suspension are equipped with AMG-specific air spring struts. There are Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes. At speeds above 45 mph the body lowers by 10 mm to reduce drag and increase driving stability, while in Sport Plus there is a further 10 mm reduction in ride height to ensure the optimum in dynamic handling response and high-speed stability.

Dimensions and weights

The ML 63 AMG has a length x width x height of 4,804 x 2,141 x 1,796 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,915 mm. Its kerb weight is 2,345 kg, and it can tow a 3,050 kg braked trailer, or a trailer of 750 kg unbraked. Electronic Trailer Stability Assist, which counters any tendency of the trailer to fishtail, is fitted as standard.
