Available in dynamic AMG Line trim, the five-strong model line-up of the E-Class Cabriolet range embodies all the traditional virtues of a Mercedes-Benz cabriolet, combined with class-leading safety and intelligent driver-assistance technology. There’s a choice of three diesel and two petrol turbo-charged engines, all with 7G-Tronic Plus 7-speed automatic transmission as standard, except for the E 350 BlueTEC, which features a 9G-Tronic Plus 9-speed automatic transmission. The range is topped by the new E 400 Cabriolet, which is powered by a new 333 hp 3,498 cc, V6 turbo-charged petrol engine.
All models in the range are fitted with the following key features as standard: Aircap wind deflector and draught-stop; 18-inch five twin-spoke AMG alloy wheels; AMG bodystyling including front and rear apron and side skirts; Agility Control suspension with Adaptive Damping System; speed-sensitive Direct Steering; ECO start/stop functionality; upgraded front brakes with a Sports braking system featuring perforated brake discs and calipers with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering; front and rear Parktronic with Active Park Assist; twin-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipes; LED rear tail lights and partial LED headlamps; automatic climate control; Bluetooth® interface for hands-free telephony; automatic seat-belt presenter for driver and front passenger; COMAND Online system with Media Interface; DAB digital radio tuner; Easy-Entry for rear passengers; leather upholstery and heated front seats; dark aluminium trim and a flat-bottomed AMG three-spoke sports steering wheel in nappa leather.
The new E 400 AMG Line is equipped with a 3,498 cc V6 biturbo engine that produces 333 hp, a performance hike that sees this performance flagship fitted with Dynamic Handling Package, allowing the driver to adjust the car’s key dynamic characteristics. Visually, the E 400 AMG Line is distinguished from other AMG Line models by its 19-inch AMG bi-colour seven twin-spoke alloy wheels; LED Intelligent Light System; AMG boot lid spoiler in body colour; AMG three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with red stitching; AMG sports seats in black leather with red stitching; nappa leather upper dashboard; Harman Kardon® surround sound system and Keyless Go.
The E-Class Cabriolet’s fully automatic roof is 23.5 mm thick and features a three-layer construction that has been acoustically optimised for class-leading refinement and insulation. It takes just 20 seconds to transform the Mercedes-Benz from snug coupé to alfresco convertible at speeds of up to 25 mph.
In conjunction with an integrated draught stop between the rear seats, the unique standard-fit Aircap feature employs a 211-part motorised wind deflector incorporated into the top of the windscreen frame. When raised, this lightweight but robust aerofoil redirects the slipstream over the top of the occupants’ heads to leave the cabin warm, calm, quiet and free of buffeting. It can also be switched on and off via a button in the centre console and activated or deactivated at high speeds of up to 100 mph. Aircap is complemented by the optional Airscarf system that delivers a regulated and adjustable flow of warm air around the driver and front passengers’ neck and shoulders, for exceptional all-weather versatility.
The E-Class Cabriolet features advanced ‘Intelligent Drive’ – a range of smart technologies that help detect critical situations and lower the risk of injuries. Key features include the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, which is positioned behind the windscreen in the vicinity of the rear-view mirror, and features two ‘eyes’ to produce a 3D view of up to 50-metres in front. Additionally, Attention Assist works across a wide speed range, with adjustible sensitiviy.
Compared to its predecessor the E-Class Cabriolet has various systems which are new or feature significantly extended functions, including Distronic Plus with Steering Assist; BAS Plus with Junction Assist to detect cross traffic and pedestrians; Pre-Safe Plus that recognises an imminent rear-end collision, prompting Pre-Safe to trigger; Pre-Safe Impulse, which pulls front occupants away from the direction of impact by their seat belts; Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS that allows main-beam to be on permanently; Speed Limit & Traffic Sign Assist, which recognises no-overtaking zones and no-entry signs; and Active Blind Spot Assist.
The E-Class Cabriolet has a length x width x height of 4,703 x 2,016 x 1,398 mm, 390 litres of cargo space (300 litres with roof stowed) and a wheelbase of 2,760 mm.
